Specialised in the production of 3D printed wristwatches, Holthinrichs brand was established by horology enthusiast Michiel Holthinrichs.
Merging his experience in designing beautiful buildings with the passion for the art of watchmaking, Michiel has created his own watch brand classic wristwatches inspired from the world of architecture.
3D- printing is the latest sensation in the field of industrial production. With his new watch brand based in the Dutch city of DELFT, Michiel brings this futuristic technology into the traditional watchmaking.
He has collaborated with 3D printing specialist Materialise and a precision engineering company in order to realise his dream. It took two-years for the testing and prototyping of the watchcase that in fact is very difficult to manufacture using traditional techniques.
While having a classic design, the watch shows the current state of the technology, emphasised by skeleton shapes and the contrast between hand-polished and coarse 3D printed surfaces. After the parts are post-processed, and all fittings are secured, Michiel had to finish the watches by hand; smoothing, filing and polishing each part so that they fit together in one unique masterpiece.
The Ruthenium dials for the watch were produced by a specialist dial manufacturing company based in Germany. The material is very rare but durable, and it gives the dial a beautiful deep anthracite colour, changing to brown and green according to the light.
The hands are made out of thin sheets of stainless steel 316L, the same material as the printed case, so no colour differences will occur. They are micro laser cut and etched, and then given hand polished bevels along the edges to make them truly stand out.
The movement beats inside each Holthinrichs watch is the classic Swiss ETA 7001 Elaboré, and apart from the (made to order) option of having it fully hand engraved.
Its architecture refers to the movements from the early and mid-20th century, and it has a sub-second hand, which has got to be one of the most classical and stylish features a watch can have.
All watches feature their unique production number integrated onto the 3D printed case of the watch. According to the client wishes this can be changed into a personal text with a maximum of 10 digits or letters.
