Seiko presents Prospex Reference SLA017J1, the Re-creation of Seiko’s (and Japan’s) first ever diver’s watch.

Launched in 1965, Seiko 62MAS-010 was the first domestically produced diver’s watch in Japan. The brand now pays tribute to its rich diving watch heritage by launching a re-edition of this icon.

This new model from the Seiko Prospex family stays faithful to the original design, but comes loaded with latest technologies in the field of mechanical watchmaking. It houses the Caliber 8L35, a self-winding mechanical movement specially designed for diving timepieces. This 26 jewel calibre is capable of delivering a power reserve of 50 hours.

Made in the Shizuku-ishi Watch Studio in Morioka in the north of Japan, the Seiko First Diver’s Re-creation (reference SLA017J1) watch is a limited edition of 2,000 pieces.

Redesigned by award-winning designer Nobuhiro Kosugi, the Re-creation boasts 3D embossed hour markers which stand up in sharp relief and yet are an integral part of the dial itself. The other highlights include the luminous dot at twelve o’clock, the slim profile of the case and the narrow bezel.

Fitted with a box-shaped sapphire crystal, the 39.9mm diameter stainless steel case is almost identical to the original, but its diameter has been increased by 1.9mm. The super-hard coating protects the watch from scratches.

Faithfully evoking the 1965 Diver’s design, this new Prospex diver’s watch has 200m water resistance. A silicone strap ensures optimum wearability both outside a wetsuit and on the wrist.

The solid stainless steel case back bears the same dolphin emblem as the 1965 original. Along with this model, Seiko has also launched the 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation references SPB051J1 and SPB053J1.
