Taking inspiration from the 18th century regulator clocks, this new automatic wristwatch from German watch brand DUFA boasts a highly legible dial featuring hours, minutes and seconds that are deconstructed into three different cycles of time.
The regulator complication first appeared in the late 18th century on clocks to improve legibility when checked by watchmakers as a reference time for the accuracy of their pocket watches. In the artistic sense there is clarity and precision in separating each hand to demonstrate the purity of each cycle of time.
In the DUFA regulator watch, the centre hand reflects the minutes while the hand that is left of centre indicates the hour of the day. The full 24 hours of the day are reflected giving the wearer a more complete sense of time. The seconds sub-dial hand moves six times a second – reflecting the inevitable passing of time – as a fluid concept.
The dial curves at the very lip creating a domed, three-dimensional outlook. The minute hand matches the same curve thanks to its careful machining of the hand so that it fits precisely underneath the lens and flows with the lines of the dial surface.
The beautifully streamlined case is fitted with a curved hesalite lens on the top. This regulator watch houses a Miyota 8247 automatic movement. The see through mineral lens on the exhibition case-back allows for a clear view of the customized self-winding movement.
