Swiss luxury watch maker IWC Schaffhausen presents a special edition Portugieser watch to commemorate the centenary of the death of its founder, Florentine Ariosto Jones. The Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound Edition “D. H. Craig USA” with a red gold case is limited to 27 timepieces and will be exclusively on sale in the United States.
IWC Schaffhausen is the only Swiss watchmaking company that was founded by an American. In 1868, American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones ventured across the Atlantic and founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen in order to produce high-quality pocket watch movements for the US market in northeast Switzerland. In celebration of the company’s American heritage and to mark the centenary of the death of F. A. Jones, IWC is now launching a special edition of the Portugieser family exclusively in the United States.
The special edition carries the description “D. H. Craig USA.” The same name was engraved on the exquisite Jones 2N Pattern H caliber. This was a tribute by Jones to his uncle Daniel Hastings Craig, a successful businessman and role model who probably also offered financial support when his nephew established his Swiss watchmaking company. As part of the launch of the special edition, IWC will also restore a historic street clock in New York City together with the organization Save America’s Clocks and display a small special exhibition in the IWC boutiques in New York and Los Angeles.
The Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound Edition “D. H. Craig USA”(Ref. IW546306) is limited to 27 timepieces – a number that stands for the age of Jones when he founded IWC in Schaffhausen. The red gold case, silverplated dial and black alligator leather strap by Santoni give the watch a refined, timeless appearance. The timepiece is driven by the IWC-manufactured hand-wound 98900 caliber with a 54-hour power reserve. The minute tourbillon at “9 o’clock” eliminates the influence of gravity on the balance, ensuring a high level of precision in combination with a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour.
The Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound Edition “D. H. Craig USA” is exclusively available from IWC boutiques and authorized retailers in the United States from October 2016. In addition to the watch, each customer will receive a numbered Santoni passport holder as a reminder of Jones’s journey to Europe as a young man and a copy of the book “F. A. Jones – His Life, Legacy and Watches,” too.
