In 2016, Patek Philippe’s patented Annual Calendar is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The newly released Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Reference 5396 marks this historical milestone.
During the past 20 years, 21 different models of this convenient complication were launched in various gold and platinum versions with various dials. Now, Patek Philippe is presenting model number 22. The new Annual Calendar watch (reference 5396) is available in 18K white gold with a dark gray sunburst dial and in 18K rose gold with a silvery white opaline dial.
The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 looks familiar but new at the same time. It brings together well known style elements and blends them in a new way to create innovative and timeless new facets.
The case shape evokes the Calatrava paragon, merges with elegantly sculpted lugs, and features a broad, smoothly polished bezel. It holds a prominently cambered sapphire-crystal glass, endowing the watch with volume and a highly modern look.
The glass protects a dial that also combines familiar elements in a subtle and perceptibly novel manner. The day of the week and the month appear in a double in-line aperture at 12 o’clock, and the large date is displayed in an aperture at 6 o’clock. A 24-hour dial with an integrated moon-phase display in the bottom half of the dial assures a visually balanced configuration.
The time indication underscores the persuasive personality of the watch: A wreath of small gold minute dots frames the hour circle composed of applied gold Breguet numerals with a distinctive 3D effect. They set a fantastic stage for the Dauphine-style hour and minute hands as well as the slender seconds hand.
The heart of the new Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Ref. 5396 is the mechanical self-winding caliber 324 S QA LU 24H movement.
Its calendar must be manually corrected only once a year at the transition from February to March, and it takes 122 years before a single-day adjustment of the moon-phase display is needed.
This precise and dependable movement with its useful complication is a true beauty as well, as evidenced by a glance through the sapphire-crystal display back.
The new Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Reference 5396 is available in two versions: The classically elegant model comes in 18K rose gold 5N with a silvery white opaline dial and color-coordinated numerals, markers, and hands as well as a chocolate brown alligator strap with a Calatrava fold-over clasp.
The version in 18K white gold has very modern technical looks. It features a dark dial in Galvanic Gray with a fine sunburst pattern, applied Breguet numerals, markers and hands in 18K white gold, as well as a matt black alligator strap with a white-gold Calatrava fold-over clasp.
