Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Regatta Automatic

Swiss watch maker Maurice Lacroix unveils Pontos S Regatta, an ocean race inspired timepiece that comes in an eye catching 45mm diameter case. It is made from cutting-edge forged carbon, proving light and strong. The complex construction process results in an interesting aesthetic, compromising of grey and black elements which deliver an eye-catching appearance. The hour and minutes are indicated with rhodium plated, faceted hands featuring luminescent coating, aiding visibility in restricted light. The minute hand features a white tip whilst the red central chronograph seconds hand is tipped in vibrant orange.

Another notable difference in the appearance of the Pontos S Regatta is the large, arcing aperture below noon, revealing numbers descending from 10. Prior to the start of a sailing regatta, a 10 minute audible signal is sounded and flags are waved to warn competitors to prepare for the impending race. At this point the push piece at 2 o’clock is pressed to actuate the countdown sequence on the dial.

The numerals from 10 to 6, shown within the aperture, are presented in blue but, as the start approaches, the numerals from 5 to 1 are shown in red, imparting a sense of urgency. There is no room for error; all members of the race team must now perform to the best of their ability. Appearing in the aperture, indicated with a black triangular pointer, the word, “Race” appears on the dial of the watch. Its meaning is unequivocal, the regatta has commenced, the time has arrived to harness the wind and master the waves.

Pushing and turning the crown at 2 o’clock allows the wearer to adjust the inner rotating bezel. Located in the centre of the crown is a push piece for starting and stopping the countdown function. Adjacent the applied indexes, is a scale calibrated for knots, allowing the speed over a given distance to be ascertained by the wearer. Despite the numerous functions of the Pontos S Regatta, it remains very user-friendly with a clear and highly legible display. All the features of this timepiece prove intuitive to use.

The central area of the dial is silver with a sandblasted finish which provides a fascinating texture to the surface. The hour track is snailed and presented in a contrasting black shade. A black rubber strap, presented on a black PVD buckle, completes the handsome ensemble and proves very practical as the sea’s spray lashes down on the fierce competitor.
