PHILIPPE DUFOUR is a world renowned master watch maker who is specialised in the manufacturing of extremely technical timepieces especially dedicated to most demanding watch connoisseurs.

Philippe Dufour was born in 1948 in Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux. He went to school locally and in a town of watchmakers, went into study watch making at the technical college. He obtained, with distinction, his Certificat d’horloger-rhabilleur. He was employed locally but, very soon, his desire for broader experience saw him working with watchmakers abroad. Back home, he then worked with several of the most famous manufacturers in the Vallée de Joux. In 1978, he set up an independent workshop. He specialised in repairing old and valuable watches, one of the most stimulating and challenging disciplines for every watchmaker.

Five years later, he completed his first Grande et Petite Sonnerie, minute repeater pocket watch, of which he produced five further examples. This was followed in 1992, by a wristwatch version, which won the gold medal for technical innovation at the World Watch Making and Jewellery Fair in Basel. This superb collectors’ piece rings the hours and quarters automatically and, by simply pressing on a push-piece, will ring the hours, quarters and minutes.

Below you can see the Grande et Petite Sonnerie wrist watch crafted in 18 carat white gold (SL No. 5). This authentic masterpiece unveils the entire mechanism of the stunning grand and small strike minute repeater, which is visible through front glass as well as transparent caseback.

The bezel can even be lifted to admire the screws underneath adorned with hand-enamelled and hand-engraved indications. The hands are of a different colour (blue) than the movement while the hour-circle, with its blued hour markers and Arabic numerals, has been applied directly to the crystal.

This masterpiece creation is equipped with a hand wound movement (21,600 vph, 35 rubies & 38-hour power reserve). The timepiece is fitted with a crocodile strap featuring an exclusive golf buckle made by the watchmaker himself.

In 1996, also at the Basel Fair, PHILIPPE DUFOUR announced the Duality, the first wristwatch with double escapement, is one of the most difficult complications to make, and is even more complex than the tourbillon.

In 2000, PHILIPPE DUFOUR presented a new model know as the Simplicity. As the name implies and in keeping with Dufour’s philosophy, this is a simple straightforward timepiece: it has no complications. This collection is available in pink or white gold or, on request, in platinum. The meticulously crafted Guilloché dial features dauphine hands and small seconds at 6 o’clock. The hand-wound movement can be admired through the case’s transparent back. The name of the brand and the individual number are engraved on small solid gold plates. The Simplicity collection offers various customisation opportunities.

Independent and perfectionist, Philippe Dufour perpetuates the creative spirit of the Vallée de Joux, the centre of complicated watch making in Switzerland. He combines his love of invention, with an unswerving loyalty to the most demanding traditional watch making methods. Modest about his own work, he nevertheless has strong views.
