LANG & HEYNE, the German horology atelier famous for their exceptional mechanical timepieces named after legendary rulers of Saxony, now unveils its latest collection Augustus I. This latest timepiece pays tribute to Frederich Augustus I of Saxony.
This exceptional mechanical timepiece boasts an innovative mechanical complication; a personal calendar function that can be used for storing important anniversaries for the owner and mechanically calculates the respective age.
The massive silver dial of AUGUSTUS is loaded with many functions. Apart from basic time indication, it boasts a retrograde dial at 9’o clock to indicate the date, a window to indicate year, and a second retrograde dial to indicate the modes of operation.
Comes to the personal calendar function, two windows at 12’o clock and 6’o clock indicate the anniversary/event and person/event respectively. Two chronograph style counters near 5’o clock and 7’o clock age in units and tens respectively. The retrograde style sub dial featuring two hands bellow 12’o clock indicates month and anniversary.
The idea of such a wristwatch-sized calculating machine is based on an invention of the Dutch watch aficionado John Twaalfhoven. When designing this watch the challenge has been to position diverse indications and at the same time keep the plain impression of the dial which is so characteristic for LANG & HEYNE. With the crown and integrated pusher different modes can be selected fast and straightforwardly.
The timepiece is equipped with new in-house developed Caliber VII, which is visible through a sapphire glass case back. The elaborately angled and engraved golden bridges and cock contrast appealingly with the rhodium-plated movement plate and flat polished steel parts. All running wheels are made of 18 ct gold.
The moving parts of movement like various wheels and levers are controlled by a three-story column wheel within the different modes.
Two Micro-differential-gears combined with a sophisticated program-rail ensure the correct calculation of the respective age.
The in house developed mechanical program-ring contains the 12 for the most important persons or anniversaries. Apposite to date, month and the indication of the year the respective age is calculated and displayed accordingly.
Due to the complexity involved in the manufacturing of such custom made timepieces, the production will be limited to only 3 pieces per year.
