This year, Oversized watches celebrate their 20th anniversary. They rank among the bestselling mechanical watches made by ZENO-WATCH BASEL. To commemorate the anniversary, all Oversized Aviators’ watches are available with scratch-resistant sapphire crystals.
Design follows function. Originally designed for observation functions, aviators’ watches are made of particularly tough, non-reflecting stainless steel. The high-contrast dial, the white Bauhaus numerals, and the nostalgic luminescent hands are extra large and eminently legibly even in diffuse light, thanks to the Superluminova compound. The handsetting crown is grip-fluted and not screwed for convenient operation with gloves.
As all Oversized models, these watches are also endowed with a high-precision self-winding mechanical movement that can be admired through the display back. The winding rotor is suspended in ball bearings.
The design is protected by intellectual property laws and dates back to the Basic Pilot model first produced in 1965. ZENO-WATCH BASEL produced the first large wristwatches in the 1940s. They were used as observation watches mainly by the military. Their size is due to the incorporation of pocket watch calibers. ZENO originally did not believe in watches for the wrist and only later began to manufacture wristwatches.
