Swiss luxury watch brand Ball Watch unveils a special edition Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster collection as a tribute to Captain Alan Goodwin “Dex” Poindexter (1961 -2012), American naval officer, NASA astronaut and commander of various Space shuttle missions for United States.
Poindexter was the first man to wear and test a ball timepiece into space. In order to honour this great astronaut and engineer, yet loving, easy going and humble man, Ball Watch Company has designed a new timepiece – Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster Captain Poindexter Limited Edition – in conduction with the Poindexter family.
About Alan Goodwin “Dex” Poindexter
Poindexter was commissioned in the United States Navy following graduation from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1986. He rose to a distinguished naval fighter pilot with more than 4000 hours of flying experience and was selected by NASA in June 1998 for their space missions. Initially, Poindexter served in the Astronaut Office Shuttle Operations Branch performing duties as the lead support astronaut at Kennedy Space Center.
In December 2002, he was named as Pilot on STS-120 mission to deliver the Harmony connecting node to the International Space Station; an assignment which abruptly ended with the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster just two months later.
In July 2006, Poindexter was assigned as Pilot on the STS-122 mission that delivered the European Space Agency’s Columbus Laboratory to the International Space Station in February 2008. Poindexter served as a lead CAPCOM for the STS-125 mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009, as well as the launch CAPCOM for the STS-127 mission in July 2009. He was the Commander of STS-131, which launched in April 2010.
During these missions, a state of the art Ball Engineering Hydrocarbon Spacemaster timepiece provided him accurate timekeeping in the adverse conditions.
In recognition to this mission Ball Watch Company received an official certificate of authenticity from the NASA, attesting the presence of Ball Engineering Hydrocarbon Spacemaster abroad the United States Space shuttle.
This highly reliable and robust timepiece featured several micro gas tubes on hour, minute, seconds hands and dial for easy night reading capability.
The exclusive edition of the original timepiece that went in to space, the Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster Captain Poindexter is a limited series of 1000 pieces only.
A portion of the commemorative timepiece’s proceedings will go to Captain and Mrs Captian Poindexter Autism foundation, “The Samuel Pfeiffer Poindexter Special Needs Trusts”.
