After the successful launch of the Gentleman classic dress watch in 2012, Swiss watchmaker DAVOSA is now introducing Vanguard Automatic, a modern Swiss timepiece that fulfills all the requirements of a true dress watch: a classic look, moderate size and discreet height – in this case a mere nine millimetres.
These dimensions make the Vanguard pleasant on the wrist while letting it slip comfortably under the cuff. The pinstripes are not the only thing that differentiates this watch from your average dress watch: Striking rectangular hour markers in place of the more usual numbers or bar index figures give it a more distinctive dial.
The DAVOSA Vanguard will be available in a black and in a white version. The wristwatch is issued in an elaborate presentation box, which includes three different leather straps and a handy strap-changing tool. The watch retails at 798 Euros.
The fine details are what give a dress watch its special character – in addition to the obligatory elegance of course.
The DAVOSA Vanguard not only has its pinstriped dial, but also three exchangeable leather straps and a strap-changing tool, which come with both versions.
In addition to a classic black and brown strap, you also have a vintage leather strap, giving the watch a more antique look.
Though not immediately noticeable, the black Vanguard model provides another interesting detail: Its hands are coated with black Super-LumiNova. In daylight they match the dial colour perfectly, but at night they display their true luminosity. The hands of the white model are equally coated in a white Super-LumiNova finish.
DAVOSA adds another special touch with its choice of a convex sapphire crystal front – known as ‘domed glass’ by watch aficionados. While the rest of the watch is designed to be especially flat, DAVOSA allows the handsome and exceptionally hard glass to take up a little more room.
The spatial effect created by the use of domed glass benefits both the dial and the watch in its entirety. Yet the wristwatch still makes a dignified impression: With a total height of nine millimteres and a diameter of forty millimetres, it remains astonishingly flat and subtle.
Further details include a polished, stainless steel case with finely polished flanks, a fourfold screw-down glass back that provides a glimpse of the Swiss quality movement (ETA 2892-2) and a rounded yet wieldy crown with its unmistakable star logo.
