The Konstantin Chaykin LUNOKHOD is a spectacular timepiece which wrote a new chapter in the history of horology by the way it displays the most beautiful complication, the Moon Phase.

For the case of the Moon watch Konstantin Chaykin chose an unusual material – wootz. And there is good reason. Complex patterned structure of this amazing steel recalls the relief of lunar surface. Large 50 mm diameter watch made of the metal used for centuries in gunnery looks very manly.

Wootz used for the case is made by one of the best gunsmiths in Russia, expert on damask steel and wootz, Sergey Lunev. And the case appearance is designed by Konstantin Chaykin and designer Vikenty Gryaznov. As planned by the developers the watch in profile resembles outlines of a lunar rover.

Manufactory caliber of the watch Lunokhod is completely designed and developed by Konstantin Chaykin. Each part was polished by hand, in the best tradition of watchmaking. Non-standard technical device is caused by need to drive the large spherical lunar phases indicator – maestro’s patented invention.

Material for the winding and drum wheels is ancient Indian wootz. The back cover is transparent to allow observing of complex and amazing life of micro details which drive the whole movement.

Lunokhod was a self-moving scout-machine which first in the history worked for a long time on the surface of a celestial body.

On 17 November 1970, Lunokhod-1 was delivered to the Moon by the automatic interplanetary station “Luna-17” and landed on the territory of the lunar Mare Imbrium. Planet rover worked on the lunar surface from 11/17/1970 to 10/04/1971 – three times longer than initially calculated for its life. During its work it investigated 80 000 sq. meters of the lunar surface and the distance traveled was 10 km 540 m.
