Famous Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin surprises and delights connoisseurs of exclusive watchmaking with his men’s mechanical watch «Hijra» with built-in Muslim calendar. Konstantin Chaykin is a member of the prestigious Academy of Independent Watchmakers (AHCI), and better known for his horological masterpieces featuring different calendar systems such as the astronomical table clock with perpetual calendar and Orthodox Easter date indicator, and table clock with retrograde indicator of the Muslim calendar dates.
This luxurious watch looks like a tiny mosque. Its case is made in strict accordance with Arab architectural traditions. Its outlines remind of the eternally young, attracting East, burning gold of sand and azure coolness of oases. The side face of the case is stylized under the column hall of a mosque – aivan. The names of Allah and prophet Muhammad are imprinted on the golden insets. An arabesque ornament which is the whimsical interlacing of geometrical and floral motives goes along the bezel. The same charming ornament surrounds the window of the indicator of Lunar phases.
Delicate performance of the hands bows to the excellent traditions of Muslim architecture: hour hand is in the form of a mosque dome, the minute hand – in the form of minaret, and the hand of the Muslim calendar dates indicator is crowned by the most known religious symbol of Islam – crescent. Every component of Konstantin Chaykin watch remembers hands and heart of the maestro, who put in it the particle of his life. Indeed processing of only one detail can take up to one hundred hours of intensive and precise maestro’s work, as in the watch of such level everything should be perfect, even the disks invisible for the eye.
But the watch is wonderful not only thanks to conceptual design. Its main feature is the ability to indicate days of week, dates and months of the Muslim calendar. The beginning of Muslim chronology is connected with the real historical events from the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The beginning of his sermonizing activity relates to year 610, and Muslim chronology begins counting from the migration of the Prophet from Mecca into Yasrib. The arrival of the Prophet into Yasrib (Medina) refers to Rabi’ al-awwal 12 (on September 24) of year 622, and 1 year of Hijra began Muharram 1st (on July 16) of year 622.
The beginning of each month of Muslim calendar is determined by Lunar cycles, the beginning of new fourth is the beginning of new month. Lunar month lasts from the appearance of one new moon to the following, i.e., 29 days12 hours 44 minutes 3,8 seconds, so some months have 29 days and others have 30 days. This explains the fact that in comparison with the solar calendar in the Muslim calendar the shift back on 10 days occurs every year. The year in Muslim calendar consists of 354 or 355 days.
The Muslim calendar is lunar by the type: it is built only on the change in lunar phases and does not depend on the motion of the sun. The structure of Muslim calendar has two varieties: “Arab cycle” based on the 30-year periodicity and including 11 bissextile years, and “Turkish cycle” based on the 8-year periodicity and including 3 bissextile years. In some countries (Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan) people simultaneously use the calendars built both on one and on the other cycle.
Month in different countries begins in different time. It happens due to the different beginning of astronomical lunar month. Classical duration of the months in Muslim calendar alternates, except for bissextile years. Calendar in Konstantin Chaykin watch is maximally approximate to astronomical lunar month and can differ in 1-2 days from the beginning of Muslim month in different countries.
