A legendary open‐road automobile race was first held more than 100 years ago on 6 May 1906. A car racing enthusiast, Sicilian Vincenzo Florio, scouted out an 148 kilometre‐long stretch of road through the hinterland of his home city of Palermo. It required a lot of imagination to call the route a racing track: It was made up of bumpy roads more often used by donkey carts.
His handsome fortune and the offer of high prize money helped him recruit ten brave racing drivers to attempt to conquer the adventurous route in their cars. The race consisted of three rounds, a total of 444 kilometres; orientation was given by means of flags and pennants marking the route. After 9 hours and 32 minutes, Alessandro Cagno from the Italian city of Turin was the first to reach the finish line in Buonfornello – with an overall average speed of 46 km/h.
The Targa Florio was held in May almost every year until 1977. Between 1955 and 1973, this classic car race was part of the sports car world championships. The DAVOSA Rallye Pilot Chronograph acknowledges the bravery and daring of these automobile racing pioneers with a limited edition model of 333 pieces.
The striking stainless steel case is based on the popular DAVOSA Pilot Chronograph, thus picking up on tradition and guaranteeing high technical robustness. The bezel of the dial is equipped with a tachymeter scale for measuring speeds.
Red detail on the Chronograph, hour and minute hands provide orientation points for time measurement. Convex, scratchresistant, sapphire glass and a screw‐down back ensure longevity in combination with a verified water resistance of 10 ATM. The Rallye theme reappears in the form of a black, calf’s leather strap with sporty perforation and red stitching. The strap is closed by means of a pressure‐release butterfly buckle.
An unusual fluted crown makes it easy to set the watch functions: hours, minutes, seconds, day and date, as well as underscoring the nostalgic nature of this timepiece. Additional enthusiasm is guaranteed if you take a look through the glass back: A finely finished rhodanised movement with blued screws signalises the high quality of the DAVOSA Rallye Pilot Chronograph.
The DAVOSA Rallye Pilot Chronograph comes in a high‐quality wooden box with a reproduction of the original Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/3 Sport from the 1971 Targa Florio on a scale of 1:43. The recommended retail price is 1,598 €.
