Soprod presents its Alternance 10 calibre featuring a new, additional module offering a big date, a dual time indication and a day/night indicator

Soprod SA was founded in Tramelan, a village in the Jura Mountains boasting an illustrious watchmaking tradition, in 1996. Prompted by the need to rationalize, a number of local watchmaking brands specialized in mechanical movements agreed to pool their assembly resources – hence the name: SOciété de PRODuction, or “Production Company”.

The market’s wholesale switch to quartz watches in the seventies represented a particularly challenging time for mechanical watchmakers, and dealt an almost fatal blow to the company. Several of the founding shareholders disappeared from the scene and the manufacture of mechanical watches plummeted. Soprod’s then managing director refused to contemplate the demise of mechanical watchmaking: he bought up the company shares and started canvassing for business throughout the watchmaking industry in Switzerland and Europe, focusing on Germany.

Four key words continue to define Soprod’s strategy to this day: quality, customization, service, and free choice of quantity. Soprod has always put its know-how at the service of all its customers, no matter how large or small – a philosophy that has helped ensure its longevity.

In 2000, pushed for space and spread over several locations, the management decided to build modern, spacious premises at Les Reussilles, in the municipality of Tramelan, where 80 staff now work. In 2008 Soprod was acquired by the H2 watchmaking group of companies, itself part of the Festina Group. As a result, it has everything it needs to develop and become a genuine alternative in the world of mechanical watchmaking. Today, its industrial vision is defined by the three letters SOP (Système Optimal de Production, or optimized production system).

The path to independence inevitably leads to the creation of an in-house calibre. In Soprod’s case, the calibre in question is the Alternance 10, a movement developed and manufactured entirely within the group, which includes various versions. This achievement signals Soprod’s elevation to the select band of genuine Swiss watchmakers. This 11½ line calibre is available in a range of versions, one of which includes a visible balance wheel. This year, in time for Basel, the Alternance 10 will feature a new, additional module offering a big date, a dual time indication and a day/night indicator.

Delivering proven reliability, these modules offer Soprod’s customers a high degree of customization. Highlights in its extensive range of movement complications include power reserve indication, lunar phase, big date, 24-hour indication, retrograde calendar, weekday indication and so forth. Soprod also develops complications specifically tailored to the needs of its customers, for whom discretion is a priority.
