Japanese watchmaker Seiko expands its sport watch family Prospex by introducing the new Landmaster Spring Drive watch, reference SBDB003.
Introduced in 1993, Seiko Landmaster series has been dedicated to adventurers who undertake extreme activities such as expeditions to Polar Regions and climbing the greatest mountains. The new Seiko Prospex Landmaster Spring Drive watch comes with several innovations to enhance its robustness and reliability.
Firstly, the watch features a new design called Dual Defense Structure that combines two casings. The inner body holds the movement and the outer body surrounding it ensures optimum waterproofness and magnetic resistance. The double structure also provides greater impact resistance.
Secondly, the Seiko Prospex Landmaster Spring Drive SBDB003 watch features a detachable bezel structure. Secured by screws and fixing parts at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock, the compass bezel can be removed for maintenance without damaging the case or bezel. In addition, this bezel can be used as a direction finder by rotating and then aligning it with the 24-hour hand (only in the northern hemisphere). Thanks to coin edges, the bezel can be easily operated even while wearing gloves.
Thirdly, the well arranged dial layout offers excellent visibility. The index design emphasizes the horizontal and vertical lines at 12-6 o’clock and 3-9 o’clock, making it easy to read the time. In addition, the date display is placed discreetly between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock so as not to interfere with the reading of the time.
Furthermore, to make the hour and minute hands long, thick and easily visible, lightweight titanium is used. Since the indexes and hands are coated with Lumibright as thick as a diver’s watch, they radiate a long-lasting glow in the darkness.
The Landmaster Spring Drive watch comes with a screw lock type crown for protecting its inner parts from damages due to impacts. When the screw-lock is open, a red line can be seen on the core of the crown, alerting the owner. In addition, the crown is placed at 4 o’clock to ensure optimum comfortability for the wrist.
Since the outer body doubles as the case-back, a smooth and wrist-hugging surface shape is realized without any protrusions. This design offers comfortable fitting and reduces fatigue and stress.
The case and bracelet are made of bright titanium, a highly corrosion-resistant and lightweight material. This 44.8 mm diameter watch comes with a 3mm thick sapphire crystal glass like those used with diving watches. Enhanced with non-reflective coating on the inner surface, this hardened glass offers better dial visibility.
The titanium bracelet comes with a one-push double-lock type inner clasp that prevents the timepiece from falling off unexpectedly. In addition, it features a bracelet expanding system usually available with diving watches. With this facility, it is possible to wear the watch over winter clothes without any complex procedures.
The new Prospex Landmaster watch houses the same movement that powers the Seiko Marinemaster Professional 600m Spring Drive model, reference SBDB001. Incorporating the proprietary Spring Drive timekeeping technology, the Caliber 5R66 offers an approximate power reserve of 72 hours.
