The Manufacture Vulcain once again displays its mastery of the art of enamelling and enriches its collection by presenting “The Pandas” Vulcain Aviator GMT model. This exceptional new model highlights a universal symbol of peace to celebrate time-honoured expertise.
Acknowledged by connoisseurs for its mastery of the art of enamelling, the Manufacture Vulcain is now enriching its collection with an exceptional new model. A universal symbol of peace and friendship, the giant panda is the charming new face of “The Pandas” Aviator GMT. Produced in a limited edition of 30 in rose gold and 30 in white gold, this timepiece once again demonstrates the extreme mastery of the age-old methods of cloisonné enamelling, patiently acquired and cultivated by the company based in Le Locle.
A Tibetan legend recounts that pandas or “cat-bears”, as they are known in the remote regions of China were they live, were originally entirely white… until the day a baby panda was saved from the claws of a leopard by an old shepherd woman who paid with her life for this act of bravery. As a token of gratitude and friendship, all the pandas attended her funeral, carrying ashes in their paws out of respect for tradition. Their soft white fur became black by them rubbing their eyes and embracing each other.
A Manufacture with a history inextricably entwined with the noblest watchmaking traditions, Vulcain could not have chosen a finer symbol to celebrate the ancestral art of enamelling. In this instance, the brand uses the distinctive technique known as cloisonné enamelling.
Just as the rice paddies of China form a stained-glass window motif when viewed from the sky, tiny receptacles are filled with the glass and metal oxide enamel powder. To fix it to the dial, the artisan heats the piece to extremely high temperatures, a sensitive and extremely hazardous operation. The particularly risky nature of the process has the effect of creating pieces that are always completely unique in terms of their reflections and their play on colours.
The masterpiece of craftsmanship represented by the dial conceals the specially decorated and rhodium-plated Vulcain Calibre V-13. Equipped with a double barrel, the latter boasts a 42-hour power reserve.
In addition to showing the hours, minutes and seconds, “The Pandas” Vulcain Aviator GMT model displays world time on a 24-hour scale adjustable by a screw-lock crown at 4 o’clock. It also features a mechanical alarm which rings for 15 to 20 seconds. Once activated, the sound is efficiently diffused thanks to the double case-back acting as a resonance chamber. The 42 mm-diameter case in 18-carat gold is water-resistant to 100 metres.
