At the beginning of the thirties the rapid advances made in aviation and automobile racing and the growing desire for media reports about car rallies and Grand Prix races represented a special challenge for watchmakers.
Tazio Nuvolari’s sensational victory at the Mille Miglia, with an average speed of 100.45 kilometres per hour, the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari in Mode in Modena and the discovery of the demanding city course in Monaco cried out for on-board clocks that were capable of dealing with the new and changing requirements. In rallies, for example, the precise observation of prescribed times was an important criterion for success, so an easily legible, precise and stoppable second hand was indispensable. These considerations resulted in a huge range of the most varied, often chrome-plated car clocks with chronograph. Competive drivers were now able to time their breathtaking road performances.
And today, these classical car tickers are very popular among vintage car and clock fans alike. Accordingly, the prices have skyrocketed.
Gerd-Rüdiger Lang, owner of Chronoswiss and enthusiastic vintage car fanatic has a few sad stories to tell about that, and this is one reason why he decided to manufacture a new on-board clock set designed in the old vintage style. This set consists of “Timemaster”, a precision timepiece that indicates the time of day and/or trip time. Its exclusive Kaliber C. 671 (18 jewels, fine adjustment for the index regulator, shock absorber) has a stoppable central second hand.
Add to this the “Stopmaster”, a functional fifth-of-a-second stopclock with a central 60-minute and a peripheral 12-hour hand. The Kaliber C.951 used here (basis Minerva 19/56, 7 jewels, Swiss lever escapement) makes addition stopping possible. The top-quality manual winding mechanisms, each reserved exclusively for Chronoswiss, are housed in solid aluminium cases with scratch-resistant, reflex-free sapphire glass covers. On both models, a rotating bezel with marker enables the timekeeper to set important target or start times. A practical mounting plate is included in the package for easy installation.
To ensure the time can be read at a glance while driving, black faces are used with luminescent Tritium numbers and the corresponding metal hands. As official timekeeper at sporting events and enthusiastic rally pilot, Gerd-R Lang knows only too well what is important in the heat of the competition. So this on-board clock set, which can of course be bought separately, is the result of many years of experience. But despite all the benefits that modern electronics have brought us, there was no shaking his decision to use conventional mechanics here. Gerd-R Lang couldn’t and wouldn’t betray his own philosophy on that count. Also and what is more, only traditional technology can guarantee that these instruments will one day be just as precious and valuable as their classical counterparts from past epochs.
