Piaget Emperador 50th Anniversary Collection

In 2007, luxury watch maker Piaget celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Emperador model by launching a new exclusive watch collection consists of four stunning watch models. An imposing, original, sophisticated and downright imperial style. Finely guilloché-worked or marquetry-worked mother-of-pearl dials. Hand-engraved decorative motifs. Ultra-thin calibres. The world’s slimmest shaped tourbillon movement…

To celebrate a half century of the legendary Emperador model, Piaget presents four creations paying tribute to the full range of watchmaking, jewellery and craftsmanship skills cultivated within the Manufacture.

1957 is a landmark date in the rich history of the House of Piaget. That was the year the Manufacture presented its famous hand-wound Calibre 9P, first in the series of ultra-thin movements that were to become one of the House “signatures” and enable it to give free rein to its creative talent.

In 1957, Piaget also distinguished itself in the field of design by launching a model that was to assert itself by its new take on classicism: Emperador. A rectangular case with rounded angles and with sides deliberately curving inwards towards the centre, along with a cambered profile gently moulding the wrist. A timeless symbol of true class and modern elegance, Piaget Emperador was to outlast passing fashions with sovereign confidence.

In 2000, Piaget revived this exceptional model by equipping it with a new ultra-thin calibre with power-reserve display and small seconds. Testifying to the brand’s rich heritage, the Emperador now assumed the noble vocation of housing the most sophisticated Piaget movements. This model was indeed voted “Watch of the Year 2000” by the jury of the specialised Montres Passion magazine awards. It was followed by a version equipped with a precious retrograde seconds mechanism.

In 2003, Piaget reached a new peak in its art by presenting the world’s thinnest shaped tourbillon movement (at a mere 3.5 mm thick), showcased within the Emperador Tourbillon model. A year later, the Manufacture introduced an even more spectacular feat by launching the Piaget Emperador Tourbillon Skeleton, the world’s first tourbillon model to feature gem-setting into the movement blank itself. The Emperador model has also been interpreted in an equally original and powerful “cushion” shape: the Piaget Emperador Coussin model with large date and dual time-zone display.

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this emblematic collection, Piaget proudly unveils four models inspired by the original 1957 case and combining a number of refined technical and aesthetic details such as the sunburst guilloché dial or gold hour-markers which embody the new graphic identity of the Emperador model, stronger and more elegant than ever. Each of these watches deserves a closer look at its specific features, bearing eloquent witness to the impressive range of expertise patiently perpetuated within the House of Piaget.

Piaget has lavished the full measure of its jewellery-making talents on this white gold model radiating an unmistakably masculine elegance. The XL case and its bezel are paved with diamonds, underscoring their original geometry. The dial is distinguished by typical Piaget refinement, featuring a diamond-set centre and a sunray guilloché rim – as well as the radiating white gold applied hour-markers and the Piaget coat-of-arms to be found on all creations inspired by historical models.

Beneath the fiery sparkle of its 323 diamonds (totalling 3.4 cts) lies an ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 524P. The transparent case-back enables one to admire the dextrous handiwork of the craftsmen who exercise their skills within the Piaget decoration workshops, exemplified by circular Côtes de Genève, blued screws and polished, hand-drawn bridges.

Exquisite mother-of-pearl marquetry-work:This jewellery version of the large self-winding Emperador watch highlights several of the precious forms of expertise perpetuated and revived by the Manufacture Piaget. The case lugs and the rim of the white gold dial are adorned with a fine raised engraving blending acanthus leaves and floral motifs. This decoration is entirely hand-crafted and makes each watch a unique work of art. The bezel is lit up by a row of diamonds, hand-set by increasing order of size.

At the centre of the dial, the most skilled artisans have cut out slender strips of mother-of-pearl to form a magnificent sunburst marquetry-work pattern. The small seconds in a hollowed square subdial at 10 o’clock signals the presence within this magnificent model of the ultra-thin self-winding Calibre 551P.

A great vintage:The large size of this Emperador model particularly accentuates the design of the rectangular case with its subtle blend of straight lines and curves. The warm shade of the 18-carat pink gold further enhances its aura of harmony and strength. The silver-coloured dial provides a highly contemporary reinterpretation of classicism by combining a sunburst guilloché motif with slender baton-shaped applied hour-markers in pink gold, embodying the new dial identity of the Black Tie collection.

The historical Piaget coat-of-arms is once again given pride of place in tribute to the anniversary of the Emperador model. Beneath this supremely distinguished face lies a self-winding Manufacture-made Calibre 524P with large date display – the flagship movement within the new Piaget collection of ultra-thin mechanisms.

The white gold dial features a luxurious hand-engraved decorative motif providing an elegant contrast with the central part and the onyx baton-shaped hour-markers – a nod to the fine gemstone dials for which Piaget has become famous.

The sapphire crystal case-back enables one to admire the meticulous engraving that appears on both sides of the watch and testifies to the superlative finishing cherished by Piaget and typified by the circular Côtes de Genève, blued screws and polished, hand-drawn bridges.
