Introduced at Baselworld 2007, Silicium Hora Mundi is an elite globetrotter. Authentically dedicated to an experience of the entire planet, Silicium Hora Mundi is designed for an encounter with the time zones, at home everywhere in the world, making no distinction between day and night thanks to its display of the 24 time zones. This creation forms part of the Academia collection, and is equally modern in its aesthetic treatment and architectural design as in its vocation as an elite globetrotter.
A contemporary creation by definition, the Silicium Hora Mundi features a range of functions in the pure pedigree of today’s timepieces. In this age of the global village, this authentic instrument displays 24 capitals symbolizing the 24 time zones which mark the division of time across the surface of our globe.
The time display featured on the Silicium Hora Mundi is an alliance of originality and elegance: while the hour and minute hands point to the reference time (local time), the second time zone is read off through a double window at 9 o’clock, indicating the destination town and the local solar time on the reference meridian. They are adjusted by means of the pushpiece at 2 o’clock. The system is completed by a date window at the 3 o’clock position. The time itself is adjusted by means of a discreet corrector flush with the middle part of the case at 5 o’clock.
Artistic architectural composition : With its sparkling texture, uniquely structured on each timepiece, the Silicium Hora Mundi dazzles the observer with the fire of its pure silicium dial. This material, a poetic crystallization with a delicate technological sheen, makes up nearly 28% of the earth’s crust and remains the commonest element on earth after oxygen. Reinterpreted by DeWitt, this composition – with its artistic architecture – plays on shades of glacier grey and black or casts a golden sparkle, depending on the chosen version.
From the original material to the fine sliver which forms the dial of this timepiece, the alchemy is long and complex involving around fifty operations which gradually impress an alchemic transmutation upon the material. Remaining perfectly true to the unexpected and original spirit which has guided the House since its infancy, DeWitt achieves a fusion of materials, with the embedded crystals taking the shape of needles or hexahedra on the dial and the precious metal, gold, expressed in its most noble colour variants of white gold and rose gold for the watch cases.
Ethereal in its aspect through a complex structure involving around forty components, the silicium dial seems to be suspended from the serrated flange which recalls the wheel of time thanks to the 12 gold attachments, each bearing a letter engraved on its internal surface. Their circular reading in the clockwise direction symbolizes the model – Hora Mundi – and the initials of Jerome De Witt.
The imposing watchcase, typical of the Academia collection with a bezel and middle part sculpted with the “Imperial columns” motif exclusive to the brand, creates an authoritative aesthetic identity. It is surmounted by the deWitt bezel with 24 traditional hollows and protects with impressive strength and elegance a self-winding mechanical movement – Calibre DW 2021.
Like every creation bearing the DeWitt signature, the Silicium Hora Mundi will be manufactured in highly exclusive editions, in strictly limited numbers, made of two precious metals. White gold is twinned with glacier grey/black silicium to create an overall impression of eminently contemporary understatement, while rose gold is accompanied by silicium treated with pure gold to engender a subtle and elegant contrast of colour hues between the sunset rose gold case and the yellow gold dial representing the sun at its zenith. The hands, indexes and logo are fashioned from 18 carat gold.
The scarcity of each one of these timepieces is underscored by the structural composition of its dial, absolutely unique to each watch, made from the same silicium sheet and with a thickness of barely 2 tenths of a millimetre. The case back repeats the same motif, a veritable signature of authenticity, protected by a sapphire crystal with a semi-circular engraving bearing the words “Unique piece” on each model. It is extended by the alligator skin strap with a new folding signature-buckle embodying a triple blade for extreme ease of operation and wearer comfort.
