IWC Schaffhausen Big Ingenieur Reference IW500501

Introduced in 2007, this new Ingenieur watch in its 45.5mm case houses the large 51113 calibre movement with a seven-day power reserve.

Ever since the revised Ingenieur first made its appearance in 2005, with the 80110 calibre manufactory movement as the engineering platform for an extremely robust generation of movements, it has not only found a place on strong wrists; its outstanding characteristics have also made it the new watch icon of the Schaffhausen manufactory.

As a pure Ingenieur, in stainless steel with a soft iron cage for protection against the effects of magnetic fields and an integrated stainless steel bracelet, it nevertheless tips the scales at just under 210 g.

However, not everyone who wants to wear an Ingenieur from Schaffhausen on their wrist works in the high-energy area or in the vicinity of a nuclear spin tomograph with its extreme magnetic fields. That is why the Big Ingenieur in stainless steel does without the technical feature of a soft iron inner case and instead offers IWC’s own large 51113 calibre movement with an automatic Pellaton winding system and a seven-day power reserve.

This is an attractive alternative, which – by dispensing with the nontransparent iron cage – saves height and offers the appealing possibility of a sapphire glass back. For the 5000-series movements also belong visually to the most interesting that exist. The 45.5mm Ingenieur case adds wearing comfort, in spite of its size, by using a leather strap instead of a steel bracelet.

Not only the case, but also the design of the dial, conform to the distinctive style of the Ingenieur. The difference being that the IWC Big Ingenieur watch shows the clearly legible date at “6.00”, while the power reserve display for seven days – with the red indication for the last day – has its place at “3.00”. The minute graduations are numbered in steps of five.

The size of the dial allows the optimal, generously dimensioned display of all the indicators. The largest Ingenieur ever built, indeed the jumbo member of the family, is engineered for robustness. This is underlined not only by the integrated side guard for the screw-in crown, but also by the water resistance and pressure resistance to 12 bar (120metres) that are inherent to the design.
